A Guide to Getting a Smile Makeover From a Dentist

When it comes to a smile makeover, most individuals must consider many options, such as what type of procedures to get, what type of dentist to visit, and how to get started. Continue reading to learn more about the process!

The smile makeover process

This information can be a helpful guide to those who are considering or preparing to transform their smile.

Getting started

To start, it is advised to consider what type of procedures are desired and needed. Common procedures include the following:

  • Teeth whitening via in-office treatment
  • Dental veneer placement to cover imperfections
  • Tooth replacement via dental implants
  • Teeth straightening via clear aligners

From there, visiting a general dentist is the next step. The dentist can evaluate the entire oral cavity and determine what route to take. This will include an idea of where to start and what is of most importance.

The timeline

Having a general idea of the timeline for a smile makeover can be helpful. This allows the patient to know what to expect regarding time commitments and results. The dentist will come up with a general timeline after determining the patient's goals.

Those who are undergoing tooth replacement or teeth straightening should expect to undergo the smile makeover process for anywhere from six months to a year. Tooth replacement requires a period of healing and fusing, while teeth straightening requires a significant shift to take place. On the other hand, simpler procedures, such as teeth whitening or dental veneer placement, will not require more than one to two appointments.

The process

The smile makeover process may include one or 10 appointments, depending on the patient's desires and goals. In most cases, any restorative work will take place first because this typically has an oral health motive as well. Any cosmetic concerns that require in-depth procedures will come next. To finish, dentists almost always recommend teeth whitening if it has not already been decided on. Teeth whitening can create a bright and even smile.

Restorative work includes tooth replacement or a dental crown or filling placement. While dental fillings and root canals are considered restorative, they are not typically required during a smile makeover process.

Cosmetic work includes dental veneer placement or teeth whitening. Straightening of crooked or crowding teeth may also be considered cosmetic, but in some cases, the concern is more about one's oral health as a result of crowding.

To conclude

While the smile makeover process will vary for each person, for the most part, these guidelines will apply to all. Ultimately, the result should be the same in that the smile should be transformed, allowing for confidence to be achieved and maintained.
